You’ve got your favorite Christmas music playing and you are happily wrapping those holidays presents when oh no! you run of gift tags?!
Here’s what to do!
8 ideas to save you from running to the store for gift tags. You’ll save money & recycle too!
These ideas are great as you can use what you have and likely were going to throw out in the trash anyways. Yup, you get to recycle too! If it’s bows you’re out of see our solution for that at the bottom on this page.
Materials? Those Christmas greeting cards or scrap card stock and some scissors. Check out of all the ideas.
Does it have a pretty design? Simply cut it out!
Got decorative scissors? Fancy edges will take your design up a few notches.
We bet you have stickers! The kids will love to join the fun with this one.
How about paper punches? Don’t forget you can get two for one by gluing the punch out to a tag AND backing the hole cut out with contrasting paper.
Rubber stamps are always fun. A simple outline, color them in, emboss them ….what suits your desire and schedule.
Adding a hole with a regular hole punch and adding twisted two color string or a festive ribbon not only gives it pizzazz but a professional flare as well.
This post is dedicated to Mom who is the source of many of our inspirations. She designed and made every one of these tags.
Santa Bow is simple and fun to make. You can use it as a gift tag on a present. Since the cuffs are white card stock, you can write “To:” your favorite person on the left and “From:” their favorite crafter … you on the right cuff. It’s a present in itself. Maybe you will choose to use it as an ornament. It’s fun however you use it.
We used two piece 1-1/2″ wide faux velvet ribbon. One is 14″ long and the other is 10″ long. Be sure to use a ribbon with some body to it or choose a wire edged ribbon. Otherwise you may need use a fabric stiffener.
You might think about a red ribbon with polka dots or how about buffalo plaid?
We used black, white and gold glitter card stock.
You could also use fabric. Here are some suggestions Black felt for the boots and inside of buckle. White faux fur for the cuffs. Glitter fun foam for the buckle.
We also used a piece of yarn and a glue stick.

Learn how to get several looks and variations from one design. This saves you money as you can easily extend the use of a single graphic design giving you more bang for the buck.
1 Changing the color scheme is the simplest way to create different looks. The variety is simply surprising!
2 Create a twofer with a single cut. For the first option, paste the cutouts onto your card using your favorite glue, (be sure to check out what we like in the product suggestions below.) Pro Tip: Check out the video for this one. The second idea is to fill the holes on the original stock with a background paper.
3 Use the draw feature to create a design to color. You can color it yourself if you like. Better yet send it along uncolored. Treat your card recipient to a little crafting creativity of their own. After all sharing crafting is a tremendous gift in itself!
4 Check out the debossing technique. With a little experimentation, we found a material that created the deboss on one side and the bonus emboss on the back side. A word of caution – make sure the material you chose can withstand machine embossing as otherwise it may tear. We learned this from experience. No debossing tip? Time to get one for your Cricut Maker. Bonus Tip: Try a stylus for those machine which cannot use a debossing tool. See how the stylus worked out on ourYour Deserve the Creditpost.
5 Use the cutout from your original stock as a stencil. Make the stencil out of a durable material if you plan to reuse it many times. You can use the stencil to trace designs onto various media or use it as a paint or ink stencil.
